Kia Ora THE

A business leaders' forum in Australia last week gave us a priceless opportunity to demonstrate that popping over to New Zealand for their next conference or incentive offer is a smart choice.

It was also valuable to work alongside our Prime Minister and senior ministers and to talk to them about the value of our industry. Over the past four years we have secured more than NZ$360 million of conference and incentive business, a hugely impressive result.

The value of the incentives business is evident in the Amway China visit which is the largest single piece of incentive business Tourism New Zealand has been involved in. Amway's top sellers start to arrive in Queenstown soon and the benefits will be felt well beyond Queenstown, with many people keen to explore other parts of New Zealand.

The official evaluation of the British & Irish Lions rugby tour which came out this month showed some great results for tourism with the majority of visitors surveyed saying the tour was a real credit to New Zealand and its ability to host world class events.

The visitors also said the friendliness of Kiwis exceeded their expectations and more than a third said they were extremely likely to return for a holiday within the next five years.

And it's not just the big events that leave a lasting impression. One of the nicest stories recently was about good old fashioned hospitality; how the couple running a small lodge at Marahau looked after guests during cyclone Gita. Back home, those guests are not just telling friends about getting caught in a cyclone but about how they were looked after. It's manaakitanga at its best.

It makes me proud to be a Kiwi when I hear stories like this. Let's keep telling them. It's what makes the New Zealand experience special.
