| | | Dear Times Reader,
When I entered the doors of The New York Times as a copyediting intern 20 years ago, I was in awe. I would go on to shape the stories of journalistic legends at the same time I was being shaped as an editor. Once hired, I thought I’d found the perfect job, one that would never change.
Boy, was I wrong. I moved from New York news to Arts & Leisure to Travel to the print masthead, becoming the first African-American woman to rise to that position. In those 20 years, The Times went from publishing articles on two main platforms — print and the web — to publishing articles, video, augmented reality and more on every conceivable platform and device. We aren’t just trying to top ourselves. We are ceaselessly dedicated to delivering our stories more vividly than ever to our subscribers and readers.
You are the reason that I used every new tool in our growing stockpile to explore the world’s urban centers and bucolic spaces in the immersive 52 Places to Go annual travel feature. You are the reason that I chose one reporter of 13,000 who applied to file stories from each of the places on this year’s list. Your passion for exploration pushes our coverage, to allow you to experience new cultures and distant horizons through our storytelling.
And you are the reason that The Times has asked me to manage special projects. My mandate is to make innovative, engaging work that brings the world ever closer to your doorstep and device. My team is already supporting new technology like augmented reality, which we introduced in our recent Winter Games coverage. As a subscriber, you’d have unlimited access to this type of work and more.
The way we cover our world not only calls for more technical innovation, it calls for reshaping the lens through which we view the world, so that we capture and speak to a broader population than ever. So I also champion and support initiatives like “Overlooked,” a series from our gender team and Obituaries section, celebrating historically significant women and others who were previously overlooked in our pages. Written with the wisdom of hindsight, these new obituaries put their achievements and lives into historical perspective and represent the increasing diversity of our readership and workforce.
It is our duty as journalists at the most ambitious news outlet in the world to give you a clear and unfiltered understanding of our world.
With subscriber support, we publish a daily word count equivalent to the entire Harry Potter series. It is all done at a high quality that distinguishes us in a rapid news cycle filled with constant, dramatic and impactful events.
I hope to be a voice of inspiration for you today when I ask you to consider the value of independent, original journalism and its potential to change the way you live in the world. Our next breaking story or innovative R&D project could have your name behind it, supported by a subscription that gives back multifold, to all involved. Become a subscriber here.
Thanks for taking this journey with me.
Best, Monica Drake Associate Managing Editor
