Cruisers represented only 1 million of the nearly 30 million visitors to Venice last year, but a 16-deck floating resort is not in keeping with the 1,000-year-old scale of the city.
Miami-Dade County and Norwegian are funding the building, which will be shaped like a long bow bridge, with transparent glass faces on the north and south sides.
"Business is strong. Let's keep it going," Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings CEO Frank Del Rio told panel moderator Peter Greenberg at the Seatrade Cruise Global trade show. "If this were Christmas and you were Santa Claus, I would ask for nothing."
With few shipyards capable of building large and midsize ships, cruise lines are pushing their orders and options further out on the horizon to be sure they aren't left in the lurch.
