| | The year is ending on a positive note with the release of the Tourism Satellite Account from Stats NZ today, showing that tourism remains a key export earner. We're continuing to see positive tourism growth with an 8.9 percent increase in international visitors for the year ending March 2017. These visitors are pumping $14.5 billion into the New Zealand economy. This tells us that the financial contribution of the tourism industry is incredibly healthy. It also tells us that the industry is delivering direct economic benefits to our communities and nation as a whole – something we'd like to see even more of in coming years. Strong tourism means a better quality of life for New Zealanders. A healthy and growing visitor economy make communities more attractive for business investment – more new shops, more places to eat and drink, more activities to keep everyone entertained, more local services and as a result, more vibrant communities with more employment. Tourism directly or indirectly employs almost 400,000 New Zealanders. As we head into peak season and many of us become tourists ourselves as we travel around New Zealand, I'd like to remind you all of the benefit the i-SITE network can play. There are around 80 i-SITEs across the country and these local experts can provide all visitors with the most up to date information they need including maps and driver guides, rules around freedom camping, information on how to stay safe and well in New Zealand and of course, they can also make accommodation and activities bookings. I would urge you to encourage visitors to speak to the friendly teams in any of the 80 i-SITES across the country if they look like they need a hand to make the most of their holidays. | | And I would encourage you all to embrace those summer BBQ conversations about how tourism benefits communities. We are all ambassadors for our industry. Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable holiday period. Meri Kirihimete. | Stephen England-Hall Chief Executive, Tourism New Zealand | | | | | | | |
