Kia Ora THE

The past fortnight has been action-packed in the tourism sector with a common theme threading through all events and announcements: ensuring New Zealand is destination ready to benefit from tourism growth and ensuring sustainable growth within the sector continues.

Congratulations to Tourism Industry Aotearoa for putting on another fantastic TRENZ event in Dunedin. The importance of the visitor economy enriching New Zealand was the focus of Tourism New Zealand's announcements at TRENZ, something that was reiterated by government and industry. Being on the same page is a great place to start. A sustainable sector is something we can only achieve by working together and I'm excited to see how we progress this.

It's great to see the sector taking big steps to prepare for growth like Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development's innovative destination management plan, Destination AKL 2025. I believe this plan sets the bar for collaboration between national, regional and local organisations across multiple sectors and I look forward to working with other regions to develop similar plans.

In order to ensure New Zealand's tourism industry, and New Zealand as a whole, benefits from a growing visitor economy, we need to work strategically and collaboratively. Information is a key aspect to making that happen, including informing smart investment in tourism infrastructure and product development decisions and Tourism New Zealand will work to make more insight and guidance available. This is particularly important in the wake of last week's Budget announcements with government investment focussed on health, education, and housing. We will absorb the Budget's $5.9 million reduction without the need to exit markets or sectors. Though challenging, I am confident that through integrated and efficient activity, Tourism New Zealand can continue to meet expectations and priorities.

It's an exciting time for our visitor economy and Tourism New Zealand is looking forward to working with you all to enrich New Zealand.

Ngā mihi,

Stephen England-Hall

Chief Executive, Tourism New Zealand
