Day 1 Highlights: 11 things we learnt today at #GSBuenosAires What a day it was! WTTC's Global Summit in Buenos Aires featured a packed schedule with opinion leaders from industry and government. Topics included Megatrends, Leadership in a Digital Age, Climate Change, Promoting Seamless Travel and Disaster Recovery.
If you missed it, don't worry. Here are 11 key things we learnt today: - Nature tourism is a key focus for Argentina. The country plans to double the amount of land given over to National Parks. H.E. José Gustavo Santos, Argentinian Minister of Tourism
- Deregulation of the skies is happening fast in Argentina. Three new companies received permission to fly in recent months and Norwegian Air is opening domestic routes this year. H.E. José Gustavo Santos, Argentinian Minister of Tourism
- Saudi Arabia has ambitious plans for tourism. With 1000km of mountains, over 1000 islands, 33 new museums being constructed and many heritage sites, there's plenty to see. HRH Prince Sultan bin Salman, President, Saudi Commission for Tourism
- The technology to make seamless travel a reality is already here. Within four years in the USA, people will be able to go from home to destination without showing a passport or boarding pass - using facial recognition. Isabel Hill, US Office of Travel & Tourism Industries
- Over 70% of travellers would be happy to share their personal data with authorities if it would mean seamless travel experiences. Paul Steele SVP IATA
- It's mainly process that's holding seamless travel up. Agreed standards for security checks already exist at international level, but only 30% of states have implemented them. Dr. Fang Liu, Secretary General, International Civil Aviation Organization
- WTTC and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change today agreed a common agenda for Climate Action in Travel & Tourism. Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change
- LNG is a new propulsion fuel for cruise ships that's far more environmentally friendly. Cruise ships that run on it will soon be in service. Arnold Donald, President & CEO Carnival PLC
- Tourism can drive growth in all sorts of spin-off sectors. An great example in Japan is Chinese tourists coming to shop for cosmetics. H.E. Keiichi Ishii, Minister for Tourism, Japan
- Leadership in the new digital age is about listening to your employees. Reverse mentorship with younger people to understand what's new is a powerful tool that leaders can use. Desiree Bollier, Chair, Value Retail
- When crisis happens, the incident itself is only part of the problem. The knock-on effects to people's jobs and livelihoods is huge. H.E. Najib Balala, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Kenya
