Day 2 Highlights: 10 things we learnt today at #GSBuenosAires On Day 2, former Presidents, global CEOs and opinion leaders covered many hot topics in Travel & Tourism including: Cybersecurity; Politics, Power and Policy; Tourism that Benefits Everyone and Combatting Illegal Trade in Wildlife. In case you missed any of it, here's a snapshot of some key points: Tourism in Costa Rica benefits lower income households and women. 80% of Costa Rica's GDP from tourism benefits the lowest quintile and 60% of the jobs created are for women. Laura Chinchilla Miranda, former President of Costa Rica The key to tourism growth is competition. Tourism has to be considered an essential part of economic policy. And you have to provide the right conditions for competition in the sector to really see growth. José Maria Aznar, former Spanish Prime Minister Collaboration is crucial to changing bad policy. 15 associations have come together to put forward the message: the planned new security questions for entering the USA just don't make sense. Roger Dow, President & CEO US Travel Association California is finding smart ways to encourage Mexicans to visit. After President Trump's negative comments about Mexico, California ran an All Dreamers Welcome campaign with 'their friends across the border'. Caroline Beteta, President & CEO, Visit California Poaching isn't limited to a few high profile species. Poaching is at an industrial scale now. 7000 species are victims of it. John E. Scanlon, Special Envoy, African Parks Locals are crucial to combating poaching. Build infrastructure, employ locals... the community starts to understand the benefits of keeping wildlife alive. They then become part of the solution. Darrell Wade, Founder, Intrepid Travel Communities near National Parks in Rwanda get 10% of earnings. So far 751 community-based projects have been implemented providing housing, schools, health clinics and clean water. Dr. Edouard Ngirente, Prime Minister of Rwanda Consulting the people helps balance growth with sustainability. Every tourism proposal has to go to public consultation in Bulgaria. H.E. Nikolina Angelkova, Tourism Minister Success in hospitality is about telling the story. Running hotels: it's all a form of theatre, of storytelling. The staff are the cast. The wine business too. Without the story it's just the beverage. Francis Ford Coppola, five times Academy Award Winner Tourism for Tomorrow Award winners are doing inspiring things. Operating the world's greenest airport, using sustainably-sourced ingredients in in-flight meals, bringing electricity to isolated Himalayan villages, employing and training local people and developing a biosphere-certified destination.
