Right now though award availability is much-improved.

Awesome Airfare: Just $266 Roundtrip New York – Italy

There's an amazing $266 roundtrip fare right now for September and October travel between New York (JFK) and Turin, Italy.

That's really all-in, including taxes. And it's on Meridiana, the Italian airline that's 49% owned by Qatar Airways. Who needs 5th freedom flights, the kind that Qatar says they aren't currently interested in operating (between Europe and the US even though they're based in the Mideast) when they can charge $266 through their Italian proxy?

The usual 'big boost' is earning 30 miles per dollar, which is a pretty good rebate for miles often worth about 1.5 cents apiece (a 45% rebate on the base price of flowers, but not really that big when you factor shipping which doesn't earn miles).

Start From Scratch, Get 2 Business Class Tickets Wherever You Want in 4 Months

I gave a talk recently to a high powered group of entrepreneurs. We talked about travel and frequent flyer programs, arbitrage, and choosing the right credit card.

And I realized when question time came that I sometimes assume too much. A gentleman sitting in the middle of the audience asks, 'so if we're just getting started and my wife and I wanted to book a trip using points from credit cards, how can we do that as quickly and easily as possible?'

Crisis Deepening in the Maldives

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen was elected in 2013, and is a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party. His half brother Maumoon Gayoom ruled the country prior to the nation's first democratic elections in 2008.

The country's first elected President Mohamed Nasheed was forced to resign in what amounted to a coup in 2012. The new government, representing interests fro the old regime, had him tried and convicted on terrorism charges.
The nation's Supreme Court threw out those charges last week. The court also ordered the release of other opposition lawmakers who were being held.
