| | This Friday is Chinese New Year, celebrated by around 1.4 billion people across the globe. China is our second largest international visitor market and after a period of incredible visitor growth we are now seeing this soften, with more moderate and potentially sustainable growth in the market. International Visitor Arrival figures released by Stats NZ this month showed a 2.2 percent increase in total arrivals from China for the year ending December 2017, and a 1.0 percent increase in holiday arrivals, up to 314,048 for the year. Free and Independent Travellers (FIT) now make up 36 percent of total China arrivals compared with 29 percent the year prior, while large group tours are down from 48 percent to 40 percent. This shift in the visitor mix reflects the focus of Tourism NZ in the Chinese market to improve the mix of high-value group and FIT visitors. China remains a hugely important visitor market for New Zealand contributing more than $1.4 billion each year to our economy. It's great to see more and more operators taking an active interest in how they can better welcome and appeal to these visitors. This week we released a series of updated infographics highlighting key insights about our top six markets: China, Australia, USA, UK, Germany and Japan. These are really useful resources for industry and have the potential to help operators ensure their business is attracting and meeting the needs of visitors. Our Industry Insights Specialist, Bryce Kelliher will also be hosting a free webinar on 1 March talking through these latest findings – register for this below. These insights are valuable for our industry to really understand what appeals to visitors.
