For months, we've been hearing about how bad rising fuel prices have been for the airlines. Profit forecasts are being slashed as analysts predict prices could end this year 25 percent higher than in 2017.
But we wonder if fuel costs are sometimes the guise used by airlines to put in place things that may not be so bad for the bottom line. Take, for example, the interview posted below by Aviation Business Editor Brian Sumers with Robin Hayes. The JetBlue CEO talks about the drag of rising fuel prices and says the carrier decided to raise baggage fees because it didn't want to burden travelers by continuing to raise ticket prices. OK. But once fuel prices go back down, and they always do, will those new baggage fees disappear? Not likely. And a fatter revenue stream is born.
