Mostly there's been no initial bonus because earning on the card is so powerful: two Membership Rewards points per dollar (on the first $50,000 in purchases each year, one point after that). Earlier this year Barclays stopped taking new applications for the Barclaycard Arrival® Plus World Elite Mastercard® while they rolled out a premium version of the card whose points transferred to miles (but which did not offer a signup bonus). Back in early July applications relaunched and they did so with the biggest-ever offer of 60,000 miles after $5000 spend within 3 months. These can be spent at a penny apiece towards travel, and when you redeem for travel you get a 5% rebate on points. The bonus then is worth $630+, and the card earns an effective return of 2.1% on your spend. Florida Democrat Senator Bill Nelson declares "Relief could soon be on the way for weary airline passengers facing smaller and smaller seats." Nothing could be further from the truth. These regulations will either do nothing, or they'll help protect the major US airlines from low cost carrier competition. They won't help travelers.
