TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

As things progressively bounce back, there are some encouraging trends in the latest overseas arrivals data released late last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for February 2023. The new data shows that international visitor arrivals to Australia in February were at 65 per cent of 2019 levels (as we welcomed 600,700 visitors), but perhaps of more interest for our sector is that for the second consecutive month now holiday visitors accounted for the majority of visitors (36%) ahead of visiting friends and relatives (34%) for purpose of visit.

This is a consistent trend we are seeing as markets open around the world, and whilst recovery is likely to remain uneven for some time yet across our markets, with China now open we are hoping for a further boost. That is why we have held back the launch in China of our Come and Say G’day campaign until the middle of the year, so that we can really capitalise on the moment leisure travellers return in full. Elsewhere, our campaign continues to gain momentum around the world through our media, public relations, and partnership activities – and by way of example, last week we rolled out of our Qantas partnership in Italy. You can read more about this below.

We have also just rolled out a new digital marketing campaign in the United Kingdom, inviting young Brits to Come and Say G’day by taking the ultimate working holiday in Australia. As Australia’s number one international market for Working Holiday Makers, this new campaign leans into the highly desirable Aussie lifestyle that awaits young travellers, encouraging them to see themselves living their dream life Down Under. More young travellers will spend and disperse but will also of course help to alleviate some of the staffing pressures facing the industry right now.
