Click here e-Flash from Tourism New Zealand | 22 March 2019 Tēnā koe, New Zealanders have done the country a great service in their response to the truly horrific events in Christchurch last week. Tourism New Zealand would like to extend our sympathies and condolences to the families and friends of the victims and acknowledge the people of New Zealand, in particular the Christchurch community for their amazing support of those affected. As an organisation, we have been greatly moved by the way New Zealand has rallied to reject the attack as not only an assault on innocent people, but also on our values of inclusivity and welcome. Following the attack, Tourism New Zealand paused all global marketing activity. As details emerged we then decided to reschedule our immediate trade and media visits to New Zealand. We didn’t take these decisions lightly. We did it because we thought it was the right thing to do. To give New Zealand time and space to support those affected and each other. It simply didn’t feel right or sensitive to be promoting the country offshore or to bring large groups of trade and media here right now. That doesn’t mean visitors who were booked to come here won’t still come to New Zealand, it just means our promotional activity offshore is on pause for the short-term, around a couple of weeks. We are now working with each of our markets to determine when might be best for each of them to come back on and what content might be appropriate in that market. In regard to the rescheduled famil activity, we will be working to re-plan this – even looking to use the same itineraries if we can. Our team will be in touch with the regional tourism organisations soon to discuss new timings if they haven’t already. We are committed to keeping industry informed about our activity as it progresses and working with you. We also know that we will need to give Christchurch a bit of love and we will be working closely with ChristchurchNZ on how we can support them and make sure the world knows what a truly amazing and inspiring city it is. If you have any questions or concerns about our decisions to pause and reschedule activity for now, please do not hesitate to contact us. Ngā mihi and kia kaha, Stephen England-Hall |
