WHY AUSTRALIA? Nature and Wildlife

Reefs, roos and the cheeky Tassie devil. Danny ‘Dundee’ McBride chats to The Outback Wrangler about Aussie wildlife.

Whether snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef or on a bush walk in the Blue Mountains, Australia is home to countless opportunities to say g'day to friendly native animals. With 84% of Australian mammals unique to the country, there are heaps of opportunities to wow clients with Aussie wildlife.

Read on for three different ways to add nature experiences to a trip and watch a ‘Why Australia?’ instructional video from The Outback Wrangler and Danny “Dundee” McBride.

Take a Swim

The waters surrounding Australia are some of the cleanest and clearest on earth. For clients that want to get off the beaten path, here are three experiences to include in a trip.

  • Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef is the only place you can swim with humpback whales (July to October) and world’s largest fish and gentle giants - whale sharks (April to June).
  • One of the best places to swim with sea lions - the puppy dogs of the sea - is on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, a short flight from Adelaide.
  • The Great Barrier Reef’s Lady Elliot Island caters to diving enthusiasts and beginners who want an unpretentious eco-camp where they can glide with manta rays and sea turtles.

Safari Time

For clients that love safari experiences, send them to one or more of these three places where they can enjoy a luxury tented camp, lodge or take a multi-day walk while enjoying new ways to spot Aussie wildlife.

  • Tasmania is home to some of Australia’s best walks, where your clients will see wallabies and wombats in abundance by day and relax at night eating and sleeping well.
  • Kangaroo Island is a wildlife hot spot and the best way to see the koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and more is on a guided 4WD tour around the island.
  • For a true Outback wildlife safari filled with birds, water buffalo and crocodiles, spend several days in the Northern Territory’s Top End at Kakadu National Park, east of Darwin.

Cuteness Overload

For those wanting a quick nature fix, add these experiences when visiting Australia’s top cities.

  • South Australia and Queensland allow koala cuddles. Head to wildlife parks near Adelaide, Brisbane and Cairns for a snuggle.
  • Platypuses are notoriously shy but in Yarra Valley outside Melbourne you can get up close at their sanctuary.
  • Wander with wombats and kangaroos in the bush just west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains
  • Snap a selfie with a smiling quokka on Rottnest Island, a short ferry ride from Perth.
