In this Tourism News we are highlighting the work we do around special interest. We continue to see visitors choose New Zealand specifically to play golf, to cycle, to walk and hike and ski. These visitors typically stay longer and spend more than the average visitor – often visiting multiple regions and in the off-peak. This supports all of our strategic priorities, which is why we place a special focus on marketing these activities. Walking and hiking is on centre stage with the launch of a selection of short walks and day hikes by Department of Conservation in partnership with Tourism New Zealand. Located across the country the promotion of these walks supports our work to encourage people into the regions and spread the many benefits tourism delivers. It's been a huge year for golf with three major international events putting New Zealand on the world stage. We have just released a golf sector progress report that details the significant growth we are seeing in New Zealand as a world class golfing destination. We are also seeing good results from our work to promote our cycling offering, the 'Transport Yourself' campaign continues to be a drawcard for our trans-Tasman visitors. Around 28 per cent of Australian visitors participate in a cycling activity while in New Zealand. There is no doubt that people who come to New Zealand to walk and hike, golf, cycle and ski represent a huge opportunity for the industry to grow value.
