TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

This week I’m in China with a senior delegation of tourism and business events leaders, ahead of the launch of our Come and Say G’day campaign in our number one tourism market. Joining me are leaders from all State and Territory tourism organisations, along with Convention Bureaux partners, and representatives from Australia’s major airports. We arrived on Sunday and have been meeting with major airlines and travel service providers in Guangzhou and Shanghai ahead of the campaign launch in Chengdu.

Tourism Australia has remained active in China over the past few years, and in March, shortly after travel from China resumed, we launched the Don’t Go Small, Go Australia campaign to capture the initial pent-up demand and visiting friends and relatives. Now with airline capacity between China and Australia back to 54 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, we believe the time is right to introduce China to Ruby the souvenir kangaroo and the Come and Say G’day campaign. Ruby is already proving to be a success in other markets around the world, and we are confident she will be very popular in China.

On Friday, we hosted our June webinar with a focus on Indigenous tourism, youth and working holiday makers, and we did a deep dive into the latest aviation statistics. If you missed it, it is available to watch and also download the slide deck here. Our next Industry Webinar will be held on Friday 28 July, register to attend here.  We also announced on the Webinar the date of our next Destination Australia conference which will be held at the ICC Sydney on 13 March 2024, so keep an eye out for more details and registration details soon

Tourism Australia ACTIVITY
Come and Say G’day to launch in China

Tourism Australia is gearing up for the Come and Say G’day campaign launch in China on Thursday night. The global campaign has been tailored for China to encourage more Chinese travellers to plan and book an Australian holiday. Come and Say G’day has been running in key markets around the world since October 2022, with the exception of China, where travel was not possible at the time.

The launch event, to be held in Chengdu will introduce China to Ruby the souvenir kangaroo for the first time. The event has been designed to make a big splash across China, with an Australian beach themed activation in the heart of Chengdu to run for days and a takeover of landmark 3D Out of Home advertising screens to run for two weeks, inviting Chinese travellers to Come and Say G’day. This initial burst of activity is to create national attention in China while work with partners begins to convert demand for an Australian holiday into bookings.

A senior delegation, including Tourism Australia Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison, State and Territory tourism organisation leaders, business events leaders and airport representatives, has been busy in China in the lead up to the campaign launch meeting with those partners in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Chengdu. The delegation has met with major airlines China Southern and China Eastern, as well as major Chinese travel service providers, including Trip.com and Jinjiang Travel.

In 2019, China was Australia’s leading visitor market with Australia welcoming 1.4 million visitors from China, contributing $12.4 billion in visitor spend. Travel from China only resumed at the start of this year, so it’s not at the same level as markets who have been returning to Australia since early 2022, but there are plenty of encouraging signs. In April arrivals from China returned to 33 per cent, up from 22 per cent in March.
