| | | | | | TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE | With the welcome return of Chinese travellers this year, we are seeing a steady recovery of the market with visitation back to 46 per cent of 2019 levels for the month of June. As with all markets when they reopen, the initial surge has been driven by visiting friends and relatives in particular, however we are starting to see an increase in holiday visitor arrivals also. As always, aviation capacity is key to this, and we are scheduled to be at 80 per cent of 2019 aviation capacity by December this year. Whilst there are growing reports that cost of living pressures are affecting the discretionary spend of travellers right around the world, our partners on the ground in China are consistently telling us that Australia remains one of the top destinations for inquiries, and recent data (the 2023 H1 China Outbound Tourism Statistics Report) tells us we are the second highest out of region destination for outbound Chinese travellers (behind the US) which is encouraging news. In good news for the cruising industry, the NSW Government announced last week the removal of cruise specific COVID protocol, the change followed advice on Friday that measures had been removed at the federal level after a decision by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC). This decision brings Australia into line with what is being done internationally and it is hoped that other states will make similar changes following the federal advice.
