| | | | | | TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE | Last week the Australian Bureau of Statistics released the latest overseas arrivals data for June. The figures show that tourism’s recovery continues to be steady, with international arrivals for the month of June back to 82 per cent of 2019 levels, and up from 56 per cent in January. Whilst this confirms we are heading in the right direction in terms of recovery, there are still challenges ahead of us. International competition for the tourism dollar remains fierce, aviation pricing is still an issue, and whilst spending on holidays by the high yielding travellers we target is still strong, we are starting to see some softening as consumers rethink their future discretionary spending to manage rising living costs and inflation. With this context in mind, at Tourism Australia we remain firmly focussed on driving demand down under through activities such as our commercial partnerships, our international events, and activations like our FIFA campaign Holiday Highlights. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ has broken all sorts of records, on and off the field. Over 1.7 million tickets were sold to packed stadiums - exceeding FIFA’s target, and there were over 2 billion views around the world - which is almost double the 2019 results. The Matilda’s are the first Australian team to gain fourth place across the FIFA tournaments, and even though the result did not go Australia's way on Wednesday night, at Tourism Australia we still harnessed the important cultural moment the match presented while the global spotlight remained on our country. We built up Wednesday’s clash against England in the morning papers in the UK, with bespoke creative, and when the final whistle blew, our Out of Home creative congratulating England (above) went live. We’ll provide some of the initial campaign results, along with some of the latest insights, as part of our update during our Industry Webinar this Friday, 25 August. We will also be joined by the Trade and Tourism Minister, Senator the Don Farrell, and Emma Terry, CEO, South Australian Tourism Commission, who will give us an update on what’s happening in South Australia. If you haven’t already, register to attend here.
