TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

The past few weeks have seen school holidays roll around again across the country, and with it, the continued support of Australians for domestic tourism. As we look to the next 12 months, it is now more important than ever that we all turn our focus to escalating the return of our international visitors, and with them bring visitation numbers back to pre-COVID levels.

To that end, on Friday Australia Marketplace Japan finished up in in Tokyo after a few successful days in Korea, and the feedback from the event was that key distribution partners in Japan are gearing up for a much stronger October to March travel season. Read more about the event below.

Finally, there was more good news last week with the government announcing the end to COVID isolation measures, with this change taking place from 14 October, allowing now for more certainty as people look to book and travel.

Australia Marketplace Japan wraps up
Tourism Australia’s annual premier trade event to engage with Japanese travel agencies in market, Australia Marketplace Japan, was held in Tokyo from 29 September to 30 September. It was an opportunity for 55 representatives from the Australian tourism industry to establish business relationships with 70 key qualified travel agencies, wholesalers, and tour operators in Japan with pre-scheduled appointments between buyers and sellers as well as evening networking opportunities. Marketplace lunches were sponsored by partners Qantas Airways and Visit Victoria. Key distribution partners in Japan are gearing up for a much stronger October to March travel season.

Spotlight on Singapore
This week, ‘Spotlight on the Regions’ features a video update from Ann Lim, Tourism Australia’s Country Manager, Singapore. Ann shares her insights and observations from the Singapore market, as well as updates on key stakeholders and activities to keep Australia front of mind in market. Watch the update here.
Growing United States agency group trained on selling Australia
Tourism Australia recently attended KeyCon22 in Orlando, Florida and educated American advisors on Australian immersive experiences and itineraries. Over 150 advisors enjoyed an ‘Introduction to Australia’ training session where Tourism Australia was interviewed on ‘KeyCon Tonight’, a late-night show style segment. These updates were supported by a series of boardroom-style workshop sessions, educating participants on why There’s Nothing like Australia for their clients’ vacations. The national conference was hosted by Key to the World Travel, a Travel Leaders Network affiliate. The growing agency group has shown great interest in upskilling their advisors on long haul destinations like Australia, with a particular focus on the Aussie Specialist Program.

Tourism Australia has released its latest travel 'Hot List' for September 2022, available now on its corporate website. The guide to the latest news and tourism offerings across the country is updated monthly. The 'Hot List' contains a wrap-up of new places to stay and experiences to enjoy around Australia. New Japanese TV series to show off Australia every week
Tourism Australia, supported by Tourism and Events Queensland, Tourism Northern Territory and Tourism Western Australia will sponsor a new broadcast mini-program series titled ‘G’day Australia’ on TBS television in Japan, airing from 7 October 2022 to 31 March 2023. The program will be broadcast every Friday evening in the greater Tokyo region and is expected to reach two million viewers per episode. A total of 25 episodes will showcase a variety of travel experiences in Australia. Tourism Australia will also run a social media campaign over the next six months to leverage the series.

Northern Territory Aboriginal Tourism Forum
The inaugural Northern Territory Aboriginal Tourism Forum will be held in Darwin/Gulumerrdgen on 17 November 2022. The Forum will provide an environment to share knowledge and experiences, celebrate the Aboriginal tourism sector and strengthen relationships. Find out more here.
BECA market sector feedback survey
The Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) is exploring the potential to create a new organisation that has the resources necessary to better represent the needs of the Business Events sector, which includes Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions. To ensure the member benefits developed for the proposed organisation are in line with business event industry needs, operators have been asked to complete a short survey to provide feedback.

Historic Darlinghurst pub launches Parisian styled hotel and rooftop bar
The Strand Hotel in Sydney/Warrane’s Darlinghurst has completed the final phase of 99-year-old pub’s multi-level redevelopment. Joining the recently opened Strand Bistro, the precinct now houses a 17-room boutique hotel and city-view Rooftop Bar. The unveiling comes as George Gorrow, co-founder of denim brand Ksubi, joins the hotel as Creative Director which has seen Gorrow and team craft a boutique Parisian-styled refuge in the heart of the city’s CBD. Meanwhile, in addition to serving up classic cocktails, The Strand Rooftop will host a series of live entertainment and weekly DJs from Friday to Sunday.
FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ first phase tickets on sale tomorrow
Tickets to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ go on sale tomorrow (6 October). Occurring across Australia and New Zealand, the first-ever co-hosted FIFA women’s tournament will kick off on 20 July 2023, with 32 teams competing in 64 matches across nine host cities and 10 stadiums. Ticket sales will begin with an exclusive Visa cardholder pre-sale from 6-12 October before a general sales phase from 13-21 October. Then, following the Draw event in Auckland on 22 October, all fans will be able to secure match tickets from 1 November 2022. Tickets can be purchased at FIFA.

Sydney WorldPride garners global attention with recent announcements
Sydney WorldPride fever is taking over the world following the announcement that pop superstar Kylie Minogue will headline the Live and Proud: Sydney WorldPride Opening Concert, presented by American Express at The Domain on 24 February 2023. Minogue will join a list of landmark headline talent for Live and Proud to be announced later this year. The announcement came as Sydney WorldPride welcomed the Amsterdam Rainbow Dress to Australia for the first time to amplify the important of the Human Rights Conference that will be hosted from 1 to 3 March 2023. Modelled by actor, theatre critic and trans woman, Suzy Wrong, the dress is a Dutch work of art made of the national flags of the 71 countries where being LGBTQIA+ is punishable by law.
