| | | | | | TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE | Happy new year and what a start we have had with China reopening! Welcoming Chinese travellers back to Australia is something we have all been waiting and hoping for, and here at Tourism Australia we are ready to go. Over the last few years we have continued to engage with both consumers and trade with an ‘always on’ approach, even when travel was not possible, and we are working closely with our key distribution and aviation partners in market to quickly convert bookings those Chinese travellers have been dreaming about. While it is still early days and aviation capacity needs to build, there are lots of encouraging signs indicating that Australia is one of the top destinations Chinese travellers are looking to visit in 2023. In other great news, international travel to Australia is continuing to return at a steady pace with the latest results (ABS for November 2022) showing there were 505,240 international visitor arrivals for the month of November. This represents 62 per cent of 2019 volumes compared to the same month in 2019. Tourism Australia’s Destination Australia Conference is fast approaching and if you haven’t already, I encourage you to register to attend. The event will take place at the ICC Sydney on Thursday 16 March and will be followed by a networking function aboard The Jackson. It will be a good opportunity to reconnect with industry and get the latest insights as you plan for the year ahead. We will be joined by a wide variety of industry and special guests, and more details about the agenda and speakers will be released over coming weeks. Finally, as we kick off the year, I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the three new State and Territory Tourism Organisation (STO) CEOs Sarah Clark, Tourism Tasmania, Patricia O’Callaghan, Tourism and Events Queensland and Emma Terry, South Australia Tourism Commission. We look forward to continuing to work with all our STO CEO partners as we collectively drive international tourism demand back to Australia.
