It was great to see the FIFA WWC 2023 injecting vibrancy into our communities and providing a welcome boost over the winter season, with holiday arrivals for July at 86% of pre-covid numbers. On the back of this, the outlook for summer is showing strong desire and connectivity out of North America and overall airline capacity sitting around 90%. While we expect a positive summer season, we are closely monitoring recovery as global economic pressures force consumers to tighten their belts and carefully consider their next holiday destination. We’re also facing fierce competition from other destinations, all vying for high quality visitors. This means we need to work even harder to capture their attention by finding compelling ways of telling our destination New Zealand story. To support this, we’ve just launched new content in our western markets featuring one of New Zealand’s most famous exports, well known director Taika Waititi to entice high-quality visitors to our home. Find out more about this below. During a time of global economic pressure, we know that tourism contribution to the economy is critical. Between April and June this year international visitors contributed $2.1 billion to New Zealand’s economy. Tourism provides an economic buffer and supports our country and communities as other industries feel more of an impact. It’s important that we ensure our contribution and growth as an industry supports our transition to a more sustainable and regenerative future. For Tourism New Zealand this means growing the contribution of visitors on the ground by shaping the visitor mix. This ensures we’re attracting high quality visitors who travel to different region and visit during off peak and shoulder seasons – spreading visitation and spend out across the year. We’ll also be encouraging visitors to participate in more tourism and culture experiences, so they feel more connected to our home and respect and protect our environment while they are here. We’re looking forward to working with and supporting industry through this summer season and beyond, as we navigate this next stage of recovery and the transition to a more sustainable future. As always - if you have any questions, feedback, or want to get in touch with myself or one of the Tourism New Zealand team, please contact us. Ngā mihi,
