Tourism is vital to New Zealand. No images? Click here 28 October 2020 Kia ora, Tourism is vital to New Zealand. In recent years, New Zealand’s tourism sector has faced unprecedented growth followed by the challenging impacts of COVID-19 and border closures. During this time I’ve advocated for a tourism sector that gives back more than it takes to our people and communities. I feel confident saying that over the past four years, our sector should be very proud of how much it has given back. In January 2021 I’ll be relocating with my family to Queenstown and joining Wayfare Group, a well-established tourism operator, as Chief Executive. Read the full announcement. The Tourism New Zealand board will appoint an acting Chief Executive shortly who will cover the role from January until they appoint a permanent replacement. Tourism is critical to New Zealand’s recovery and I am pleased to be staying in the tourism family to continue supporting the sector. I am incredibly proud of the team at Tourism New Zealand, they’re in a fantastic place with a firm focus on encouraging domestic visitation to support New Zealand’s recovery. The organisation is keeping New Zealand’s brand alive internationally for the return of overseas visitors, while ensuring that tourism gives back more than it takes to Aotearoa and its people. To continue to build on this momentum, Tourism New Zealand with the Regional Tourism Organisations and industry need to continue to push the boat out and get New Zealanders' attention to help them consider doing something new. Our latest piece of work seeks to do just this. We’ve teamed up with iconic comedy duo Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek to release a song to inspire Kiwis to ‘Do Something New’, all in the name of supporting domestic tourism. Read the press release and watch the video. The video was filmed across ten different regions in New Zealand and features more than 30 tourism activities and local points of interest, including Waitomo Adventures' Lost World, Auckland Bridge Climb, Waka Abel Tasman, and Puzzling World in Wānaka. Thank you to all those who helped support this piece of work – we simply could not have done it without you. The video is supported by content on newzealand.com to encourage planning and booking. While I may be leaving Tourism New Zealand, I’m not leaving the sector - I am excited for the opportunities that are ahead for us all and hope to continue working with many of you, albeit in a slightly different capacity! I remain dedicated to my role at Tourism New Zealand and will continue to advocate for the sector. In the meantime if you have any questions please contact me. Ngā mihi, Stephen England-Hall Chief Executive, Tourism New Zealand |
