Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, facing the ignominy of being driven away from a royal residence in an unmarked police car on his 66th birthday.

The King’s brother, formerly known as Prince Andrew and the Duke of York, must now answer questions from police over passing confidential documents to his friend Jeffrey Epstein while working as a trade envoy representing Britain overseas.

It is hard to overstate what a seismic shock this will be to a Royal family and a nation which has watched in mounting disquiet as the Epstein files showed the extent of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s contact with Epstein.

His arrest is without precedent in modern history. The King has already said he will support the police in any investigation. Eight forces are now looking into separate claims of misconduct and whether women were trafficked to Mr Mountbatten-Windsor.

On his 66th birthday, shortly after breakfast, the breaking news alert came: “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is in custody.” He is Queen Elizabeth II’s son, King Charles’ brother, and he is currently in a police station facing the first real questioning of his life.
