| | The first wave of Amway China's top sellers arrived in Queenstown last week and our Board Chair Kerry Prendergast and I had the privilege of attending their gala dinner at Coronet Peak on Thursday. The dinner, followed by a spectacular fireworks display, capped off a successful week where around 560 Amway sellers and staff enjoyed the region's tourism activities and culinary delights. Amway is the largest incentive programme Tourism New Zealand, and quite possibly New Zealand, has ever been involved with and is expected to contribute at least $37.5 million to the national economy. The remaining 5600 sellers will arrive in Queenstown in waves over the next seven weeks to experience some of what New Zealand has to offer. Our team in China along with Destination Queenstown, Air New Zealand and Immigration New Zealand spent almost two years working with Amway to secure the trip, so it's exciting to see all their hard work come to fruition. Enticing incentive business like this to New Zealand is an important part of our strategy to grow the value of international tourism to New Zealand. On average, incentive delegates tend to spend more than holiday visitors and travel to multiple regions, making them a high-value sector for the tourism industry. Data released last week shows spending by international delegates attending multi-day conventions and conferences in New Zealand grew by 17 per cent in 2017. The data also shows that international delegates stayed an average of 7.2 nights, with 2.8 of these spent outside the event region. This shows that other regions are also benefiting from these international events. | | | |
