TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

Last week the latest round of our international Australia Marketplace Events kicked off in Singapore with Australia Marketplace South East Asia. This event provided an important opportunity for the Australian tourism industry to establish and strengthen relationships with travel agents and tourism operators across the region, and with markets like Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia in attendance, the business created at this event will play an important role in our recovery. The latest arrivals numbers show in the month of May 2023, arrivals to Australia from Singapore were back to about 95 per cent of 2019 levels, and our research also tells us that this is a market with very high repeat visitation once those high yielding travellers we target discover all that Australia has to offer. You can read more about the event below.

Also this week, Australia Marketplace in India concludes today. It was yet another opportunity for representatives from the Australian tourism industry to meet with agencies and operators from India across two and a half days of pre-scheduled appointments. India has been one of the fastest inbound markets to recover, and over the past 12 months we have welcomed more travellers from India than we did in 2019. The Indian market’s recovery has been fuelled by a strong aviation environment, with new routes coming online between our two countries since two way travel resumed.

Finally, this Friday we will be holding our July Industry Webinar. This month along with an update from me on some of the latest insights and TA activities, we will be joined by Michael Johnson, CEO, Accommodation Australia to talk about where things are at for his newly formed association and its members, and Sarah Clark, the new CEO for Tourism Tasmania will give an update on where things are at in her part of the world. If you haven’t already, please register to attend here.

Tourism Australia ACTIVITY
Australia Marketplace South East Asia

Australia Marketplace made a strong return to Southeast Asia from 19 to 21 July. Hosted in Singapore, the event was the biggest yet with over 114 sellers showcasing Australia’s breadth of experiences. Eighty-eight buyers from across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia – and for the first time, the Philippines and Thailand – attended.

Moreover, Tourism Australia’s Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison attended and met with key distribution partners as well as trade media to strengthen industry relations in the region. With 7,045 appointments facilitated over the two and a half days, it proved to be another year of success.

With South East Asia one of the key regions for travel recovery to Australia, Marketplace continues to be a powerful platform to spur the region to head Down Under, especially as Australia remains high in consideration among travellers from these markets. From engaging trade partners, to helping industry players form deeper connections in South East Asia, the event and activities in market continue to remind the region of the iconic experiences Australia has to offer as well as introducing many new ones.

Aussie Specialist Program Travel Agents: Training carnivals in China
Tourism Australia held a series of Aussie Specialist Program training carnivals in late June 2023 in China. The carnivals were held in conjunction with the launch of Tourism Australia’s 'Come and Say G’day' campaign in China. The training carnivals refreshed the agents' knowledge of Australia and showcased the 'G’day' movie trailer. Leaders from all Australian State and Territory tourism organisations attended the carnivals and interacted with agents in order to encourage the agents to promote their respective Australian experiences.

The North America Aussie Specialist Program team attended a series of trade shows this month. Over the five days, connections were made with over 200 travel advisors via one-to-one meetings, boardroom, and lunch presentations.
