As I mentioned last week, at Tourism Australia we are winding up the full breadth of our activities to welcome back travellers from China. Whilst we expect it to take some time for numbers to bounce back to 2019 levels, last week’s announcement by many of China’s major airlines that they are re-establishing their routes to Australia is very welcome news. The return of airline seat capacity will be key to recovery, something which may be spurred along by today’s news around a significant increase in Chinese students coming back to Australia. I would like to offer my congratulations to members of our industry who were included on the Australia Day Honours list for 2023. The late Stephen Gregg AM for his significant service to the Queensland tourism industry. Also honoured were George Booth OAM, Helen Edwards AM, and Wendy Cutting OAM. The events industry was well represented with Gregory Hood OAM, Gregory Bowman OAM and Anthony Bastic AM recognised. You may have seen, the Best Australian Beaches 2023 were announced over the weekend. The list is pulled together by beach expert and Friend of Australia, Brad Farmer AM, who has spent over four decades researching and visiting Australia’s beaches. Find out more about this below. Phillipa Harrison Tourism Australia ACTIVITY Destination Australia Conference 2023 speakers Tourism Australia has released details outlining a few of the great speakers locked in for the upcoming Destination Australia Conference. Further speakers and the full program will be released in the coming weeks. Find out more here. Asia Mega Famil Showcase Tourism Australia is hosting the Business Events Australia Asia Mega Famil Showcase in April 2023 with host city partner BESydney. The program will include three days in the host city of Sydney/Warrane, where international planners from India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea will have the opportunity to meet with Australian convention bureaux during a half day business session and enjoy a destination showcase. The buyers and media will also experience another Australian destination via either a pre or post famil. Australia voted Best Destination in Asia/Pacific by US Travel Advisors  Australia was selected as the Best Destination in the Asia-Pacific region at Travel Weekly's 20th annual Readers' Choice Awards last month in New York City. The honour was awarded after an open ballot nomination and two rounds of voting by Travel Weekly readers, who include travel advisors, industry executives and CEOs of the world's largest travel companies. Winners in other categories included airlines, hotels, tour operators, and cruise lines, all representing the best of the best in travel.  December and January Hot List released Tourism Australia has released its latest travel 'Hot List' for December 2022 and January 2023, available now on its corporate website. AUSTRALIAN STORIES Poh Ling-Yeow to host pop-up dining experience at QT Melbourne From tomorrow, beloved Australian chef and the MasterChef alum Poh Ling Yeow is set to open her first brick-and-mortar restaurant experience at QT Melbourne. Open until May 2023, Poh will be taking over QT Melbourne's former Cake Shop, to create an in-residence three-month pop-up dining experience called The Singleton's Delicious Discoveries. Here, a literal train conveyer will deliver eight sweet, savory and surprising dishes, paired with The Singleton whisky and create-your-own interactive cocktails. Kangaroo Island beach named the Best in Australia for 2023 A South Australian icon has claimed the coveted ‘Best Australian Beach’ title, with Stokes Bay on Kangaroo Island the winner for 2023. Located on Kangaroo Island’s north coast, Stokes Bay is family friendly and features a tidal swimming pool perfect for wading and snorkelling.
