TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

Over the past week, we’ve heard some positive announcements with Victoria announcing their roadmap for opening to align with the National Plan, and New South Wales trialling a home quarantine pilot. In addition to the growing rate of vaccination, both of these are key to reopening domestic and then international borders.

Last week, Tourism Australia announced a new partnership our newest Friends of Australia, The Wiggles. The new Wiggles-themed family hub on Australia.com is interactive and has some great activities to do during lockdown, so I encourage you to take a look, if you haven’t already done so. This partnership is just one of example of how we continue to look for new opportunities to keep Australia front of mind with consumers even while travel might not be possible.

Attica and Legend Australia Pop-Up Brings Taste of Australia to NYC
Tourism Australia supported a pop-up dinner at New York restaurant, Niche Niche, in partnership with wine importer, Legend Australia, and Friend of Australia, Ben Shewry. Consumers and top-tier American media enjoyed iconic Attica menu items, including "the dish that saved Attica" (pepper-crusted, deep-fried lamb) and uniquely Australian ingredients like finger limes and lemon myrtle, as well as signature pours from wine importer Legend Australia. The immersive storytelling experience generated organic social media posts by attendees, hosts and Attica, supporting Australia and showcasing the country’s food and wine offerings whilst borders remain closed.

Tourism Australia and key luxury partners attended This Is Beyond’s ‘The Digital Show’ held from 6 to 17 September. The global ‘invitation only’ event hosted over 1,200 premium buyers from the PURE Life Experiences, LE Miami and We Are Africa communities, and facilitated new business connections while showcasing Australia’s premium experiential offering including the Signature Experiences of Australia. Tourism Australia presented a one-hour Destination Spotlight highlighting our increased focus to champion and elevate Australia’s Indigenous and sustainable tourism experiences. Post-event, Australia will be a featured destination on This Is Beyond’s ‘House of Beyond’ platform, continuing to inspire and engage premium distribution partners ahead of market reopening.
Best Partner Program Wows Hong Kong Corporates
‘WANDERful Australia’ staycations in Hong Kong
Tourism Australia has partnered with The Mira Hong Kong Hotel, Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), and Miramar Travel to provide the ‘WANDERful Australia’ staycation. The project runs from September to November at Mira Hotel, as part of the Austrade Festival of Australia showcase. Consumers will be immersed in Australia’s unmistakable landscapes at The Mira Hong Kong including Australian-themed rooms, which feature premium Australian products, devised by the Tourism Australia to bring an Australian holiday to Hong Kong. The campaign is supported by a HK$1000 travel coupon for each staycation package, consumers can redeem on designated Australia tour packages and travel Downunder once borders reopen.

 Assistance for WA tourism businesses
Support for aviation industry
The Australian Government has committed a further $183.65 million to help maintain Australia's international aviation capability in readiness for international borders reopening. The funding package includes:
  • $119.65 million to extend the International Aviation Support program by five months to 31 March 2022; and
  • $64 million for aviation security screening cost rebates for Australia's major international airports from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022.

Support for Queensland
The COVID-19 Business Support Grants have been extended to support businesses impacted by the closure of the Queensland-New South Wales border in recognition of the close connection between border communities. Read more here

Support for Tasmania
The Tasmanian and Australian Governments are providing an extra funding support program for Tasmanian businesses with a total of $70 million now available for operators impacted by border closures. The existing Business Support Package will be boosted from $20 million to $50 million, with grants of up to $50,000 available to eligible businesses across two funding rounds. Read more here

Willing Distillery launches a cellar door in Darwin’s industrial estate
Newly launched family-owned artisan distillery, Willing Distillery has opened its cellar door and cocktail bar in the heart of Darwin’s light industrial estate. Specialising in blending distilled craft spirits with unique Australian flavours, the Willing Distillery cellar door provides an opportunity for travellers to explore the unique and traditional flavours of the Top End. Upon launch, the relaxed cocktail bar serves drinks topped with the distillery’s own Darwin Dry and Desert Lime gins in addition to a range of appetisers. In the coming months, Willing Distillery will be expanding its product offering to include vodka and whisky that will hero local ingredients. Make a venue booking via the website.

The Ghan sets off on a food and wine adventure through the Clare Valley
 The Ghan sets off on a food and wine adventure through the Clare Valley Journey Beyond, the operator of The Ghan, has launched a new one-day experience that allows guests to participate in a food and wine adventure through one of South Australia’s leading wine regions. Setting off from Adelaide to the Clare Valley, the Taste of The Ghan experience showcases the region’s wine offerings and South Australia’s contemporary dining culture by honouring local produce. Before enjoying a three-course lunch in a Clare Valley vineyard, guests can participate in immersive ‘talk and taste’ sessions with local creators onboard The Ghan. Bespoke five-day East Coast Expedition cruise sets sail in Tasmania
A new five-day nautical exhibition in Tasmania will allow guests to bathe in the spectacular sights and sounds of the state’s east coast. From October, Tasmania Boat Charters will run a small-group charter voyage, the East Coast Expedition, through destination highlights such as Hobart, Port Arthur, Wineglass Bay and the cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula. Departing from Hobart, the voyage offers groups of up to 10 a chance to craft a bespoke itinerary which can include time for bushwalks, wildlife encounters and kayaking. In addition to exploring the region with an expert local guide, the charter will also house a personal chef who will profile the diversity of locally sourced produce and providers.
