| | | | | TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE | Yesterday I virtually attended the Global Eco Asia-Pacific Conference which is being held in Margaret River, Western Australia and I took this opportunity to shine a light on sustainable tourism. Sustainability is a trend that was growing before COVID-19 hit and has been amplified over the last year as a result of the global pandemic. We will be talking more about sustainability and what it means for Australia’s tourism industry over the coming weeks and month. With that in mind, our final webinar for the year will be held this Friday 4 December at 11am AEDT. We will be joined by two guest speakers, Jan Hutton, CEO of the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse and Janine Duffy, co-founder and operator of Echidna Walkabout, who will be talking about what sustainability means to them and how they incorporate it into their businesses. I encourage you to register here if you haven’t already done so. As it is the last webinar of the year, I will also be giving a bit of an overview of Tourism Australia’s priorities going into 2021. You may have also seen Channel Nine’s Today Show ‘summer series’. Tourism Australia is a partner of the series which will run through until February 2021. Travel segments will be featured throughout the program as well as in the weather section that together aim to encourage consumers to travel over the summer holiday period. Tourism Australia is launching a burst of activity around this as well, so make sure you tune into the webinar on Friday to hear more about these initiatives. The launch of the series complements further announcements this week on domestic borders reopening as we move into the peak holiday season. Finally, I’d like to extend my congratulations to the new Chief Executive Officer of Austrade, Mr Xavier Simonet. I am looking forward to working with him to support Australia’s tourism industry. Federal Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham said most travel agents face the unique circumstance of having to refund existing bookings at the same time as they manage their operating models in the face of ongoing uncertainty about international travel. “This one off payment recognises that travel agents are operating in an exceptional set of circumstances where most are having to refund last year’s income while continuing to work with no additional income,” Minister Birmingham said. | | | | 2020 Meetings and Events Australia National Awards open | The 2020 Meetings & Events Australia (MEA) annual National Awards portal is open for submissions.
