The campaign aims to increase awareness of New Zealand as a destination during of the world’s largest rugby tournament. It expresses gratitude on behalf of New Zealand and showcases the warm welcome Japanese visitors can experience in New Zealand as a place to visit, study and do business. You can read more about the campaign here. Japan is an important visitor market for New Zealand. It’s our sixth largest market in terms of both size and spend, accounting for around 100,000 arrivals each year and contributing $273 million to the economy. Over the past few years there has been a growing trend in Japan to take multiple short holidays each year which has impacted New Zealand arrivals. Following a strong period of growth, arrivals started to moderate near the end of 2016 and from mid-2018 arrivals were in decline. We’ve responded to this trend by creating more itinerary options for the Japanese travel trade to sell to their clients and by expanding our paid media advertising in order to reach a wider range of potential visitors. While yearly arrivals are still in decline, we have been seeing a positive trend towards growth since the beginning of the year. However, there is still more work to do to reposition New Zealand as the ultimate holiday destination. The world’s largest rugby tournament provided an excellent opportunity to do this by showcasing New Zealand in a different way in order to win over the hearts of the people of Japan.
