You ever had to say goodbye to a friend?
Someone who's been in your life for so long?
We all have that friend, the one with shared memories, inside jokes, a whole chapter of your life.
But somewhere along the way, you start to drift.
You try to hold on, because of what was, but eventually you realize… you don't have much in common anymore.
The friendship isn't adding value to either of your lives. You're just holding on because, well, you've always been friends.
The same thing happens with followers.
If you've been on social media for a while — I'm talking 3, 5, even 10 years — you've grown. You've changed. Your content has evolved.
And your audience? They've changed too. Sometimes you find that your once-loyal followers feel a little distant.
It's not your fault. It's just that you're not as relatable to them as you once were.
So what do you do as a creator?
You've got two choices:
1. Adjust your content to match where your followers are in their lives.
2. Adjust your content to match where you are in yours, and hope they come along for the ride.
Can you guess which one I'm going to suggest?
It's the latter. Because the first path, creating for them, leads to burnout. You start catering instead of creating.
But when you create for you, you're staying true to your evolution, your voice, your energy.
That's the key to longevity.
And remember, every goodbye leaves space for a possible reunion.
You might find that some of those followers who drifted away years ago start showing up again, because suddenly, you're speaking to where they're at now.
Happy Creating!
