TOURISM AUSTRALIA UPDATE

Last week at the Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in Cairns, the National Sustainability Framework for the Visitor Economy and a Sustainable Tourism Toolkit was launched. Jointly developed by the Australian, State, and Territory governments, the Framework provides a nationally agreed understanding of sustainable tourism and a vision for Australia to be a world leader in sustainable tourism. The accompanying Toolkit is a practical guide for tourism SMEs, offering easy-to-understand information for operators to implement sustainable practices. Both initiatives, aligned with the THRIVE 2030 national strategy, underscore the critical role of sustainability in the future success of tourism businesses and to the sector itself. Find the Framework and Toolkit here.

For businesses who already have sustainability policies, commitments, or action plans in place, we have also launched two new communication guides for tourism and hospitality operators, and destinations. Developed in partnership with EarthCheck, the Sustainability Storytelling guides are designed to support users in effectively communicating their sustainability efforts to a global audience via marketing and communications. Find more information and download the communication guides here.

Our December Industry Webinar will take place on Friday 15 December at 11am AEDT. This will be our final webinar for 2023 and along with an update from Tourism Australia, we will be joined by our Chief Marketing Officer, Susan Coghill, who will give an update on our ‘Come and Say G’day’ marketing campaign. Register to attend.

New tourism forecasts from Tourism Research Australia

International visitors are expected to return to Australia more quickly than previously predicted, according to Tourism Research Australia's latest forecasts. The Tourism forecasts for Australia: 2023 to 2028 report published yesterday outlines stronger growth for international arrivals than last year's forecasts. This reflects the return of Chinese visitors to Australia since China's borders reopened in January and the restart of group tour travel from China to Australia in September. Sustained high growth in international arrivals to Australia so far this year, and the continued return of flight routes and commencement of new routes to Australia, also underpin the encouraging projections. Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell said "A thriving tourism industry is crucial to our economic prosperity, with every dollar spent in the visitor economy generating a further 81 cents for other parts of the economy. Tourism is a major export earner and employer. One in eight Australian businesses is tourism-related and it is the lifeblood of so many Australian communities”.
